President John Dramani Mahama has set a new precedent by donating half of his annual salary to Ghana’s healthcare sector through the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares.

The initiative aims to improve access to quality healthcare, especially for patients battling severe and chronic conditions.

Speaking at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Tuesday, April 29, President Mahama highlighted the personal motivation behind the initiative. He recalled the loss of family members in 2001 and 2016 due to serious health challenges, emphasizing the urgent need for improved medical support in the country.

He also shared the emotional story of a staff member whose child depends on expensive weekly dialysis to survive, illustrating the burden many Ghanaians face in accessing life-saving treatment.

President Mahama called on individuals, companies, and institutions to support the fund.

“I want to encourage corporate Ghana businesses, mines, banks, and all other companies that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is for your clients who save money in your banks or do business with you. Some of them are even your own staff,” he said.

“As part of your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), if you give anything, consider that you are giving to your own staff or customers. I encourage all corporations in Ghana, both private and public, to donate a portion of their annual CSR budget to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. It will do a lot of good for this country,” he added.
