The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a demonstration on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to protest what it describes as systematic intimidation of its officials by the Ghana Police Service.
The move follows a court order extending the detention of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, for an additional two weeks. He was arrested on September 8 for allegedly engaging in “offensive conduct likely to breach public peace” and has remained in police custody since.
In a Facebook post on Friday, September 12, NPP’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, declared that the youth wing will lead the protest march from Obra Spot to the Police Headquarters, starting at 6 a.m. sharp. He said the demonstration aims to send a clear signal against what the party perceives as politically motivated harassment of its members.
Meanwhile, the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is also facing investigations over alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Other NPP activists have similarly been arrested in separate cases, developments the party insists are part of a deliberate campaign to target its leadership.
Party officials say they expect a massive turnout on September 23 as they intensify calls to resist actions they believe undermine Ghana’s democracy.
