The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has announced a deadly fish disease outbreak in Ellembelle District, prompting urgent government action to protect the fishing industry and local livelihoods.
According to a statement released by the Ministry on June 4, the Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) disease was first detected on January 12, 2025, after reports emerged.
“Further investigations confirmed the outbreak of Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS), a severe transboundary disease recognised by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH),” the statement said.
In response to the report, the Ministry assembled a team of experts from various institutions, including the Fisheries Commission’s Fish Health Unit, Water Research Institute, Accra Veterinary Laboratory, Emed Diagnostic Services, Food and Drugs Authority, and West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens.
The Ministry stated that 80% of samples tested positive for the disease using histopathological and PCR testing methods.
To mitigate the outbreak, a temporary fishing ban has been imposed on the affected rivers in the Ellembelle District, including the Ebi, Amanzule, and Fia.
Authorities are also restricting live fish movement and enforcing safe disposal of infected fish.
MoFA urges the public to be vigilant and report any abnormal fish behavior or appearance.
