The Central Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has confirmed that recent floods and fire outbreaks have affected a total of 4,636 people across the region, leaving many displaced and in urgent need of assistance.

At a press conference, Central Regional NADMO Director, Mr. Kwesi Dawood, disclosed that the affected residents are now seeking shelter in churches, mosques, classrooms, and with relatives — a situation he described as deeply troubling.

The disaster has caused widespread devastation, particularly in low-lying communities. In Cape Coast, a tragic incident occurred when a dilapidated two-story building collapsed after seven hours of continuous rainfall, claiming the lives of a 79-year-old woman, Madam Atta Panyin, and an 84-year-old man, Opanyin Emmanuel Ankaful. Three others who were trapped in the debris are currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Mr. Dawood revealed that 11 Municipal and Metropolitan District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been affected by the floods, including:

  • Awutu Senya East
  • Gomoa East
  • Awutu Senya West
  • Effutu
  • Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abrem
  • Twifo Atti Morkwaa
  • Hemang Lower Denkyira
  • Agona West
  • Asikuma/Odoben/Brakwa
  • Agona East
  • Cape Coast Metropolis

In response, NADMO has already demolished three structurally compromised buildings and plans to demolish all old and dilapidated structures deemed hazardous to prevent further casualties.

The agency is appealing for urgent support from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), corporate entities, philanthropists, and private individuals to help provide relief to affected victims. Immediate needs include:

  • Food and potable water
  • Temporary shelter and technical support
  • Clothing and bedding
  • Psychosocial support and trauma counseling
  • Financial aid for reconstruction and recovery

Donations can be made through the NADMO Central Regional Office or via the respective affected MMDAs.

Mr. Dawood emphasized that collaborative support is crucial to mitigating the impact of the disaster and rebuilding affected communities.
