Court Grants Chairman Wontumi Bail in Two Illegal Mining Cases; Travel Restricted

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and owner of Akonta Mining Company Limited, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has been granted bail by two separate High Courts in Accra over charges related to illegal mining activities.

In the first case, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay at the Criminal Division of the High Court, Chairman Wontumi pleaded not guilty to multiple mining-related offences. The court granted him bail of GH¢15 million with three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

As part of the bail conditions, he must deposit his passport with the court registrar and has been placed on a stop list at all entry and exit points across the country. The sureties are also required to submit copies of their Ghana Cards and digital addresses. Additionally, the accused must report to the case investigator on the first and third Monday of every month.

The prosecution has been given three weeks to file all necessary documents. The case has been adjourned to October 28, 2025.

In a second, separate case, heard by Justice Ruby Aryeetey, Chairman Wontumi was granted bail of GH¢10 million with two sureties, one of whom must justify with landed property. He is also required to report to the police twice a month and surrender his passport to the court registry.

That case has been adjourned to November 4, 2025.
