The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, accusing it of using state security agencies to intimidate and harass opposition members.
In a press statement released on Friday, May 23, 2025, the NPP described recent actions by security operatives as politically motivated and an assault on Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law.
The party’s outrage follows a dawn raid on the residence of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi,” by armed men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The NPP alleges that the raid was a direct response to Kumi’s recent petition to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the dissolution of the committee probing petitions related to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The NPP says this incident is part of a broader pattern of political persecution and the misuse of state institutions to stifle dissent.
The statement also referenced the recent raid on the home of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, claiming that it occurred despite prior cooperation with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
“These actions are clear attempts to suppress opposition voices and erode the foundations of our democracy,” the party stated.
The NPP has called on Ghanaians, civil society organizations, and democratic institutions to speak out against what it describes as a dangerous abuse of power. It urged all defenders of democratic values to resist any efforts to weaken political pluralism in the country.
