A man believed to be in his early 30s has drowned in the Pra River at Bimponagya in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.

The victim, identified as Kwame Mamud, was reportedly swept away by the river’s strong currents while engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

Hon. Kennedy Avornu, the Assembly Member for the area, disclosed that the incident occurred three days before it was officially reported. According to him, residents said Mamud went missing during a galamsey operation, prompting a search that initially yielded no results.

It was only after traditional leaders poured libation to seek spiritual guidance that the body was discovered. Unfortunately, Mamud had already died by the time he was found.

The deceased, originally from northern Ghana, had relocated to Bimponagya to work as a galamsey operator. The case has since been reported to the police and the Ghana National Fire Service, while the body has been sent to the hospital for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
