The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that 16 commercial drivers were arrested on Monday, January 26, 2026, for allegedly extorting passengers through the imposition of illegal transport fares in parts of the Ashanti Region.

The arrests were made during a special enforcement operation led by the Ashanti Regional National Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) John Kwame Jabari, with support from other security agencies. Some vehicles linked to the alleged offences were also impounded.

Dr Amoakohene said the exercise was in response to numerous complaints from commuters over arbitrary and unauthorized fare increases by some commercial drivers.

He explained that the one-month-long operation is a joint initiative between National Security and other security agencies aimed at restoring discipline and sanity in the commercial transport sector.

The exercise, he noted, will focus on fare-related violations as well as other forms of misconduct among commercial drivers, particularly operators of ‘trotro’ vehicles, and warned that offenders would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
