The Forestry Commission in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality participated in the country’s “Green Ghana Day” celebration on the 7th of June.
During the occasion, several dignitaries including the Municipal Chief Executive for the Upper Denkyira East Constituency, Hon. Ebenezer Appiah Forson, Dunkwa hene Dr Okoforobour Obeng Nuakoh lll, security service personnel, and the Education Director were present. Also in attendance were students and teachers from Boamponsem Senior High school, as well as residents from Dunkwa On-Offin and neighboring areas.
The District Manager for the Forestry Commission, Baba Musah Iddrisu, stated that Upper Denkyira East, together with Upper Denkyira West, Twifo Atimorkwa, Pretea Huni Valley, and Wassa Amenfi East, is aiming to plant 200,000 trees across the five districts and municipalities as part of the country’s goal to plant ten million trees.
He mentioned that the government initiated the “Plant a Tree” program three years ago to combat the effects of climate change in Ghana. Mr. Iddrisu also expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the “Green Ghana Project,” noting that 74% of the trees planted over the years have survived and are growing well.
Dunkwa Hene, Dr. Okoforobour Obeng Nuakoh III, emphasized that the trees being planted are not just for the government, but for all of Ghana and its citizens. He urged traditional councils and leadership to play a role in protecting the trees and take measures to stop individuals from cutting down trees without replacing them.
Dr. Nuakoh III encouraged continuous tree planting beyond the celebration.
Hon. Appiah Forson, the Municipal Chief Executive, thanked all who took part in this year’s “Green Ghana Day” and urged everyone to join in planting a tree to benefit the next generation.
