Hours of heavy rainfall on Friday caused extensive flooding at Moree in the Central Region, leaving sections of the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway impassable and disrupting the movement of thousands of commuters.
A taxi carrying two occupants was swept away by floodwaters after the driver reportedly lost control while attempting to drive through the submerged section of the road. Residents quickly intervened and rescued the occupants, while the vehicle was completely submerged by the floodwaters. No casualties were reported.
The flooding caused heavy traffic congestion, with vehicles stranded from Yamoransa Junction to the vicinity of Aggrey Memorial SHS. Several passengers abandoned their vehicles and continued their journeys on foot through the flooded portions of the highway. Some commuters told Rich FM News they had been caught in the traffic for more than four hours without any indication of when the situation would improve.
Residents said the rainfall, which began early in the day and lasted for more than five hours, caused drains and nearby waterways to overflow. They expressed concern that continued rainfall could worsen the flooding and threaten lives, property and businesses in the area.
The incident has renewed calls for government and local authorities to address the recurring flooding in Moree by improving drainage infrastructure and implementing long-term flood control measures. Residents said such interventions were necessary to protect lives and ensure the smooth flow of traffic along the busy highway.
