The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a major policy shift that will allow candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to select their preferred Senior High Schools (SHS) after the release of their results.

The Minister disclosed the new arrangement on Wednesday, explaining that it forms part of broader reforms to the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) aimed at enhancing fairness and improving efficiency.

Under the new policy, candidates will be given a mandatory one-week period after the release of their results to confirm their school choices based on their academic performance.

“In the past, students selected schools without knowing their aggregate, and that affected the placement system. This time, we will provide a mandatory period of one week after results are declared for students to confirm their choices based on their performance,” he stated.

The move marks a departure from the previous system, where students selected their preferred SHS before sitting for the BECE, often without a clear indication of their likely results.

The Minister said the reform was expected to address longstanding challenges associated with the placement system and ensure a more transparent and merit-based process.

He added that the new approach would empower students to make informed decisions, reduce mismatches in placement, and improve the overall efficiency of admissions into Senior High Schools.
