Ghana’s diplomatic efforts to secure the release of two nationals captured in the ongoing war in Ukraine took centre stage on Tuesday as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

The high-level meeting focused on Ghana’s humanitarian appeal for the release of the two citizens currently being held as prisoners of war in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The discussions also addressed growing concerns over trafficking networks allegedly targeting vulnerable African youth and drawing them into the conflict under false pretences.

Speaking after the engagement, Mr Ablakwa described the talks as constructive and necessary.

“Our primary mission is to secure the release of our two compatriots on humanitarian grounds. We are encouraged by the assurances received and remain optimistic about a successful outcome,” he said.

According to the Minister, Ghana raised concerns about criminal syndicates that exploit unsuspecting young Africans with promises of jobs and better opportunities, only for them to end up in dangerous combat situations.

“We cannot ignore the disturbing trend of trafficking syndicates luring vulnerable African youth into a war they did not sign up for. Ghana is committed to working with Ukraine and international partners to dismantle these networks,” he added.

Mr Ablakwa conveyed the appreciation of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to the Ukrainian authorities for ensuring that the rights of the detained Ghanaians are being protected in accordance with international law.

The meeting forms part of Ghana’s broader diplomatic engagement aimed at safeguarding its citizens abroad and strengthening bilateral relations with Ukraine.
