Baba Jamal’s campaign team has welcomed the National Democratic Congress’ decision to retain him as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election, describing it as confirmation that the earlier primary was free and fair despite allegations of misconduct. Speaking on Wednesday, Baba Alhaji, campaign manager for the former deputy minister, said Jamal’s victory was legitimate and the election was peaceful, transparent, and properly conducted.
Alhaji addressed allegations of inducement and vote-buying raised by an investigative committee, arguing that such accusations unfairly singled out Jamal. He said monetisation has become a broader challenge in internal party politics and noted that the election was not determined by the highest spender, with other candidates who allegedly distributed more items still losing. The campaign manager added that efforts at reconciliation would begin immediately to ensure party unity ahead of the by-election, with all former candidates invited to join Jamal’s campaign team.
Looking ahead, the campaign said it will focus on jobs, skills development, and local infrastructure. Among its pledges are plans to turn Nima into a skills and employment hub, construct an ultramodern market with parking facilities, and improve education infrastructure across the constituency. Jamal, according to Alhaji, remains committed to cooperation and has fully complied with inquiries from the Office of the Special Prosecutor regarding vote-buying allegations and a related incident during the primary.
