The Lady Mart Foundation has, for the fifth consecutive year, fed and donated food items to more than 300 widows in and around the Upper Denkyira East Municipality.
The fifth edition of the Lady Mart Widow’s Mite Programme was held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the forecourt of the Wisely Methodist Church at Dunkwa-On-Offin, attracting widows from across the municipality and surrounding communities.
Since its inception, the Lady Mart Foundation has consistently supported widows, the needy, children, and the youth through various social and humanitarian interventions.
The Foundation was established in honour of the late Mrs. Martha Owusu, who lived as a widow for about 40 years and single-handedly raised approximately nine children. Her life of sacrifice, resilience, and service continues to inspire the vision and mission of the Foundation.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Akwesi Agyeman, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority and son of the late Mrs. Owusu, expressed gratitude to God as the family marked nearly five years since the passing of their mother.
He said the Lady Mart Widow’s Mite Programme had come to stay and assured that the vision and aspirations of his late mother would continue to reflect in the works of the Foundation.
Mr. Agyeman advised the widows to prioritise their health by regularly checking their blood pressure and engaging in moderate physical exercise.
He further disclosed that plans were far advanced to introduce small revolving loans to support the widows in engaging in trading activities, enabling them to make profit and repay the funds for others to also benefit.
The programme was attended by children, grandchildren, and other family members of the late Mrs. Martha Owusu, making the occasion both memorable and impactful.
As part of the activities, food packages and assorted drinks were distributed to the widows, while health professionals conducted medical screenings and attended to various health conditions identified among some of the beneficiaries.
Beyond the Widow’s Mite Programme, the Lady Mart Foundation has undertaken several development-oriented initiatives. In May 2024, it organised a one-day skills training programme for 200 residents and widows at the Upper Denkyira East Municipal Assembly Hall. Participants were trained in soap making, bead making, ice cream production, and local beverage preparation.
In the same month, the Foundation donated three adjustable hospital beds, adult sanitary towels, pillows, centimetre catheters, straight flush equipment, diapers, and other medical supplies to the Dunkwa Municipal Hospital, and also renovated the children’s ward to improve healthcare delivery.
In furtherance of its support for education and adolescent health, the Foundation in 2024 donated sanitary pads to female students of Boa Amponsem Senior High School at Dunkwa-On-Offin to promote personal hygiene and self-confidence among the students.
The widows expressed gratitude to the Lady Mart Foundation and the Agyeman family for their continuous support and compassion.
The Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to empowering widows and other vulnerable groups in society while sustaining the legacy of the late Mrs. Martha Owusu.
