A man identified as Prince Nkrumah, an ICT national service teacher at Ansah Redeen Basic School in the Assin Fosu Municipality, has died in what authorities suspect to be suicide, reportedly triggered by emotional difficulties connected to a failed relationship.
According to some of his colleagues, Prince had offered significant financial and emotional assistance to a nursing trainee he was romantically involved with. After completing her training, however, the woman is said to have ended the relationship and begun seeing another person an outcome that allegedly left Prince deeply troubled.
Confirming the incident to Jornalist, the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, said information from the school’s headteacher suggested that Prince had recently shown worrying signs of emotional instability. When asked about his sudden change in demeanor, Prince reportedly blamed it on the pupils’ inability to understand ICT lessons, insisting he was frustrated with their academic performance.
The school administration, noticing his distress, sought help from his church leaders, hoping they could offer guidance and support.
Matters escalated on Thursday when Prince failed to report to school. A team sent to his home found the door locked. Upon forcing their way in, they discovered him unresponsive, with indications that he had consumed a substance believed to be weedicide. He was rushed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, where he later died on Sunday.
Prince, originally from Mankessim, was serving with the Ghana Education Service as part of his National Service.
Unconfirmed reports suggest a handwritten note was found in his room, pointing to a deliberate act. As at the time of this report, the matter had not been formally lodged with the police.
