The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has declared an indefinite strike in protest against what it describes as unfair treatment and neglect by the government.

According to TEWU leadership, the government has failed to address long-standing concerns regarding conditions of service, promotions, and welfare packages for non-teaching staff in educational institutions across the country.

While TEWU members withdraw their services, the Coalition of Unpaid Newly Posted Teachers has also staged street demonstrations demanding the payment of salary arrears. The group claims that some of its members have been working for over 13 months without receiving a single paycheck.

Speaking during the protest, coalition leaders expressed deep frustration over the government’s silence on their plight, stressing that many affected teachers are struggling to survive despite performing their duties diligently.

The simultaneous action by TEWU and the newly posted teachers has sparked fears of widespread disruption to academic activities nationwide if their grievances remain unresolved.

Meanwhile, education stakeholders and civil society groups are urging the government to urgently engage both unions to avert a full-blown crisis in the sector.
