The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily closed several schools in the Upper East Region following violent incidents that rocked the area between July 20 and 26, 2025.

Affected institutions include Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS where student deaths, injuries, and property damage were reported.

In a statement issued on July 29, GES condemned the “tragic” attacks and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and affected communities.

“We stand with them in this difficult moment and assure them of our full support,” the statement said.

As a safety measure, the affected schools have been closed to allow for thorough assessments and emergency response planning.

However, SHS 3 students will still write the WASSCE at specially designated examination centres. SHS 1 and 2 students will continue lessons via alternative learning platforms.

To help students and staff cope with the trauma, GES is strengthening counselling services across the affected schools.

The Service commended the Ministry of the Interior for coordinating the evacuation of students and pledged continued collaboration with security agencies to protect educational institutions.

GES is also calling on stakeholders including community leaders, parents, and law enforcement to support efforts to restore peace and safeguard education in the region.
