The Director of Communication and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Emma Adwoa Appiah Osei-Duah, has clarified the rationale behind the GH₵258 monthly allowance paid to sanitation workers under the company’s contract.
In an interview with the media, Madam Osei-Duah explained that the amount paid to sweepers is not unilaterally decided by Zoomlion but is the result of consultations between the company and relevant authorities.
She noted that the commonly cited GH₵600 figure is often misunderstood. According to her, that amount is not solely intended for salaries or company profit but instead covers multiple contract components, including logistics and management fees.
“There is a discussion after the submission of proposals, and both parties agree on what amount is appropriate for each aspect of the contract,” she said. “Zoomlion doesn’t issue a fiat regarding how the money is disbursed.”
She further clarified that the GH₵600 covers two primary areas:
Logistics (such as tools, protective clothing, and consumables)
Management fees, estimated at about GH₵160, though the exact figure may vary.
“We don’t go to the market every month. We are a business, so we buy in bulk, stock our stores, and supply quarterly or whenever necessary,” she added.
Madam Osei-Duah also revealed that Zoomlion has proposed upward adjustments to workers’ allowances on several occasions, but existing contractual obligations have so far dictated the current payment structure.
