The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially scheduled a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
In a statement signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, the Commission explained that the seat had become vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election under such circumstances.
Nomination forms for aspiring candidates will be received from Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the EC’s Denkyembour District Office. Submissions will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and again from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
Each candidate must submit two recent passport-sized photographs taken against a red background, clearly showing the full face and ears. A non-refundable filing fee of GHC 10,000 is required.
However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHC 7,500.
Candidates must also present completed nomination forms endorsed by 20 registered voters from the constituency comprising a proposer, a seconder, and 18 others. In addition, each candidate must include a written consent to the nomination.
The Commission has urged all prospective candidates and the public to adhere strictly to the rules and deadlines to ensure a smooth nomination process.
