The race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections is intensifying, with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia meeting over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on Monday, June 23.

The meeting, held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, follows a recent gathering where Dr. Bawumia hosted over 60 NPP Members of Parliament at his campaign office, many of whom declared their support for his flagbearer bid.

The former MMDCEs, who served under previous NPP administrations, are expected to deliberate on campaign strategies and are likely to formally endorse Dr. Bawumia ahead of the party’s January 2026 presidential primaries.

Monday’s engagement is seen as a strategic move by Dr. Bawumia to consolidate grassroots and administrative support within the party as he seeks to secure the NPP’s leadership.

Just a week earlier, fellow flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong also met the same group of former MMDCEs behind closed doors, as part of efforts to bolster his own campaign.

The NPP flagbearership race is shaping up to be highly competitive, with several high-profile contenders already in motion. The outcome is expected to significantly shape the party’s direction and electoral prospects ahead of 2028.
