The National Association of Registered Midwives (NARM) Ghana has distanced itself from the ongoing strike action declared by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
NARM President, Leticia Asaba Atiah, cited disrespect and a lack of due process as key reasons for their decision not to participate.
According to Madam Atiah, a meeting with the Finance Minister was scheduled for June 18, 2025, to address the concerns and demands raised by registered nurses and midwives. However, GRNMA proceeded with the strike without waiting for that engagement despite NARM’s disagreement with the decision.
She noted that NARM Ghana prefers continued negotiation with the Health Minister to resolve issues such as Professional Identification Number (PIN) renewals and other conditions of service.
“We think that we should go back and negotiate, even though the agreement has been signed,” she said.
Madam Atiah emphasized that due process was not followed in declaring the strike and stressed that NARM Ghana does not support the industrial action.
“When the decision was made, there should have been respect for us. It seems they thought our size or bargaining power was inferior.
We weren’t part of the decision because we hadn’t even met with the Finance Minister yet so we don’t support this action,” she added.
