Retired military personnel and former Deputy Defense Minister, Major Derrick Oduro, shared his views on President Mahama’s recent visit to Bawku during an exclusive interview on Denkyiraman Radio’s National Agenda on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
In an effort to leave a lasting impact as President and to promote peace and reconciliation between the two conflicted tribes of Bawku—the Mamprusi and the Kusasi—President John Dramani visited the region on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Retired Major Derrick Oduro expressed his enthusiasm regarding the President’s initiative. He stated, “Appointing personnel to oversee national security is crucial in the early stages of the administration, especially now that Bawku faces significant threats. Similar to when Dagbon was in dire need of security and the entire community felt under siege, former President Nana Addo Danquah was able to establish calm through effective security measures. Therefore, President Mahama has made a commendable choice in seeking the former president’s support for managing the situation in Bawku.”
Additionally, the former Deputy Defense Minister mentioned that security experts Kofi Boakye, Charles Kipo, and Abdul Osman Razak are highly competent and capable, ensuring that all official security duties surrounding the President’s office are fully managed. However, he emphasized that they need to stay informed about the political process, as their roles now intertwine with politics in addition to their professional responsibilities.
Major Derrick also noted that Bani, who previously served as Chief of Staff in government, is already well-versed in his responsibilities.
He advised all five selected candidates to consistently consult and learn from experienced individuals who can share their knowledge and insights.
