Mr Evans Nimako, Director of Elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the party will consult its leadership to assess the Supreme Court’s ruling declaring the political party delegate system unconstitutional and determine an appropriate strategy for compliance.

Speaking to Citi FM on Wednesday, Mr Nimako said the NPP remained committed to the rule of law and would carefully study the court’s judgment before deciding on its next course of action.

“As a law-abiding institution, coming from the court, we don’t have any option but to respect the pronouncement of the court,” he said.

The Supreme Court, in a 5-2 majority decision, directed political parties to replace the delegate-based system with one that allows all eligible members to vote directly in presidential and parliamentary primaries.

The Court also ordered political parties to put in place the necessary measures within one year to comply with the ruling.

Mr Nimako, however, questioned the practicality of implementing the directive within the stipulated period, particularly in relation to identifying members eligible to participate under the new electoral arrangement.

He observed that political parties operated within established electoral timelines and said it remained unclear whether the responsibility for determining members in good standing would rest with the Electoral Commission or the political parties.

“As New Patriotic Party leadership, we will strategise and see how we can operate because we’ve always operated under a legal regime that promotes the continuous development of democracy,” he said.

Mr Nimako said although the Supreme Court had issued its directive, political parties would have to study the full judgment to fully understand its implications and the implementation process required.

He reiterated the NPP’s commitment to complying with the law while engaging its leadership on the practical measures needed to align the party’s internal electoral processes with the court’s decision.
