Government has reverted the name of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
A statement issued by the Ministry said the facility was originally known as Accra International Airport before its name was changed, adding that it had been deemed appropriate to restore the airport to its former and internationally recognised name.
The Ministry assured the public that the change would not affect airport operations, safety standards or international travel arrangements.
It said the airport code “ACC,” as registered with the International Civil Aviation Organization, had always remained the same and would continue to be used.
The statement explained that the renaming process would involve the systematic update of official documentation, relevant statutory instruments, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications and other related communication materials.
Government called on the general public, stakeholders and international partners to cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.
The Ministry expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their continued support.
The debate over the renaming intensified in recent weeks following a February 3 announcement by the Majority Leader that government would introduce a bill to revert the airport to its original name.
Proponents of the move say it honours the Ga people whose lands were acquired for the construction of the airport and reinforces Ghana’s democratic credentials.
However, some critics have opposed the decision, arguing that it undermines the legacy of General Emmanuel Kotoka and could deepen political divisions.
