Voting has ended in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nationwide presidential primaries, with more than 211,000 delegates casting ballots at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies nationwide to elect the party’s flagbearer.
The exercise was conducted under heavy security and strict supervision by party officials, and was largely described as peaceful and orderly.
Counting and collation of results are ongoing, but provisional constituency results indicate that former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has taken an early lead in several parts of the country.
At the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra, Dr Bawumia polled 308 votes to lead the field, followed by Mr Kennedy Agyapong with 160 votes. The remaining aspirants recorded single-digit figures.
Dr Bawumia also secured decisive victories in a number of constituencies, including Yabaga/Kubori, where he ran unopposed and obtained 379 votes. He also won in Effiduase Asokore (456), Sekondi (392), Bantama (454), Subin (515), Asawase (662), Tema East (883), Nsawam-Adoagyiri (707), Dome-Kwabenya (900), Ledzokuku (898), and Awutu Senya East (794).
Mr Kennedy Agyapong, however, emerged victorious in some constituencies, notably Assin Central with 495 votes, Effutu (644), Gomoa Central (349), and Hemang Lower Denkyira (233).
Dr Bryan Acheampong also demonstrated pockets of support, leading in constituencies such as Abetifi, where he polled 665 votes, and Nsuta Kwamang Beposo with 378 votes.
The other aspirants, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Mr Kwabena Agyepong, recorded comparatively low figures across most polling centres.
The leadership of the party has assured delegates and the general public of transparency in the collation process. Final certified results are expected after the nationwide aggregation of votes.
The eventual winner will lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
