The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mr. Mussa Dankwa, has expressed surprise at the unexpected shift in voter support in the Volta Region during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, where Dr. Bryan Acheampong secured votes that had largely been projected for Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
Speaking to the media on Monday, February 2, Mr. Dankwa explained that pre-election models had indicated steady support for Mr. Agyapong. However, a significant number of undecided delegates and those who initially declined to disclose their voting preferences eventually swung in favour of Dr. Acheampong.
“Even though about 32 per cent of the delegates said they were not disclosing their choice, it turned out that most of them actually voted for Bryan. That was probably one of the biggest shocks for me,” he said.
Mr. Dankwa attributed the late shift in support to strategic campaign decisions and messaging in the final stages of the primaries.
The election, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, recorded a massive nationwide turnout, with more than 196,000 delegates casting their ballots at over 300 polling centres.
Out of 195,901 valid votes cast, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged winner with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent. Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), followed by Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent). Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum polled 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent), while Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong secured 402 votes (0.21 per cent). A total of 561 ballots were rejected.
Mr. Dankwa further noted a collapse in Mr. Agyapong’s support in the final weeks of the campaign.
“To the extent that he did not gain any of the non-disclosing delegates from what we observed, he rather lost votes among them. We were expecting him to gain about three per cent of that group, but instead he lost about two per cent. Bryan took everything from him and significantly widened his margin,” he stated.
