A 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate, Awudu Gariba, tragically passed away on Friday, June 13, 2025, after collapsing at the Adiembra Examination Centre in the Assin South District of the Central Region.

Awudu, a student of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, reportedly began exhibiting signs of illness during Thursday’s exam and was taken to the Assin Adiembra CHPS compound for medical attention. However, he was not attended to due to the ongoing strike by nurses.

On Friday morning, while writing the first paper, Awudu collapsed at the centre. He was rushed to the Assin Fosu Polyclinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Assin South District Education Director, Isaac Opoku, confirmed the incident to Citi News and expressed shock over the student’s untimely death. He noted that arrangements were being made to formally inform the bereaved family.

Frederick Agyei, Headteacher of Nnuanua Number 1 Basic School, confirmed that Awudu had shown signs of illness the day before. He said the school tried to get him medical help immediately, and expressed sorrow over the loss. He also appealed to the community and fellow students to remain calm during this difficult period.
