The Wasa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly has launched a renewed operation to stop illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, at the Domiabra Cemetery following reports of encroachment on the burial grounds.
The operation, led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Raymond Nana Ebbah, involved a joint taskforce comprising personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), assembly members, and traditional authorities.
An inspection of the cemetery revealed portions of the land had been degraded through unauthorized mining activities, sparking concerns over environmental destruction and the desecration of the sacred site.
Traditional leaders present at the operation expressed strong disapproval of the activities, describing the mining of a cemetery as disrespectful, unacceptable, and a violation of cultural values.
Chief Superintendent William Jabialo, together with officers from the National Intelligence Bureau, assured residents that security around the area would be strengthened. They said routine patrols and intelligence-led operations would be intensified to arrest perpetrators and prevent further illegal mining activities within the cemetery enclave.
The Municipal Assembly has appealed to residents to support security agencies by providing information and helping to protect sacred sites and environmentally sensitive areas from unlawful mining.
