The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Hon. Isaac Yawson, has cautioned timber contractors in the area to desist from operating in the district’s forests without authorization from the District Assembly.
In an interview, Hon. Yawson warned that any contractor found logging without a permit will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. He emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that all timber operations are conducted responsibly to safeguard the environment and protect the livelihoods of local communities.
He also urged traditional authorities and community leaders to support the Assembly by monitoring and reporting the activities of unauthorized timber operators. According to him, collaboration between the Assembly and chiefs is crucial in curbing illegal logging in the district.
Hon. Yawson further stressed that all logging operations must be guided by formal agreements between contractors, the Assembly, and the affected communities. Such agreements, he explained, would ensure that farmers and property owners receive adequate compensation for any damages caused during operations.
He reiterated that defaulters will face severe sanctions, including arrest and imprisonment, adding that the Assembly will not tolerate any form of environmental exploitation.
