Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region have intensified efforts to curb the use of unregistered motorcycles and tricycles on local roads. A joint security operation earlier this week led to the seizure of 72 vehicles, including 59 motorbikes and 13 tricycles, for violations such as lack of registration, absence of number plates, and failure to wear protective helmets.
Upper Denkyira East Police Commander, DSP Simon Boavo, told the media that the crackdown followed consultations held three months ago with commercial riders and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). He stressed that impounded vehicles would only be released upon provision of valid documentation, adding that offenders who persist in breaking the law could face prosecution.
Municipal Chief Executive, George Anane, appealed to commercial motorbike operators, popularly known as “okada” riders, to cooperate with authorities and seek assistance if they face genuine challenges in meeting registration requirements. He further disclosed that the area’s Member of Parliament, Lawyer Emelia Ankomah, will soon distribute free helmets to fully registered riders as part of efforts to promote road safety.
