Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has petitioned former President John Dramani Mahama to publicly condemn the recent use of Ghana’s Independence Square by two foreign nationals to promote homosexuality.

A viral video shows the couple kissing and celebrating what appears to be a wedding ceremony at the national monument, sparking widespread public outrage.

Mr. Assafuah is calling on the former President to support urgent measures for the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill currently before Parliament. He described the incident as a “moral assault” and a “spiritual insult” to Ghana’s national conscience.

His comments add to the growing debate over Ghana’s position on LGBTQ+ rights and the use of public spaces for such expressions. The incident has reignited discussions on the symbolism of national monuments and the preservation of Ghanaian cultural values.

Other lawmakers, including Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, have also weighed in, accusing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of fostering a culture that disregards traditional values. Rev. Fordjour specifically attributed the controversial event to what he described as the NDC’s perceived leniency on LGBTQ+ matters.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill currently under consideration in Parliament seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ advocacy and related activities. A final vote on the bill is still pending.

The incident continues to stir national conversations about Ghana’s identity, morality, and legislative direction on LGBTQ+ rights.
