Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has visited flood-affected communities in Accra to assess the extent of damage and expedite interventions aimed at preventing disease outbreaks.

The Minister toured areas including Circle VIP, Neoplan Station and Achimota-Aloboshie following the recent floods that affected parts of the capital.

During the visit, Mr Akandoh directed the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to intensify disease surveillance, strengthen risk communication and scale up community-level public health interventions across all affected districts.

He urged health workers to step up public education on disease prevention in collaboration with the media, traditional and religious leaders, and educational institutions.

As part of the response, the Ministry of Health convened a multi-agency meeting involving the Ghana Health Service, the National Ambulance Service, Faith-Based Health Providers, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the Ministry of Local Government to coordinate measures to address urgent water, sanitation and hygiene challenges arising from the floods.

The Ministry has also called on all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to collaborate with health authorities to enforce environmental sanitation measures and minimise public health risks.

It advised food vendors to adhere strictly to hygiene standards, while residents were encouraged to clear choked drains, eliminate stagnant water around their homes and remain vigilant for snakes and other animals that may have been displaced by the flooding.

The Ministry assured the public that the situation remained under control and that all necessary measures were being implemented to safeguard public health and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of health services.
