Mahama Orders Reinstatement of 64 Radio Stations, Citing Need to Balance Regulation and Press Freedom

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications to work with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to reinstate 64 radio stations that were taken off air due to regulatory non-compliance.

The move is aimed at striking a balance between regulatory compliance and the protection of media freedom.

Addressing the matter in a statement on Thursday, June 12, President Mahama stressed the importance of safeguarding free speech while ensuring adherence to broadcasting regulations. He urged regulators to adopt a more accommodating approach in their engagements with media outlets.

The directive includes the provision of a reasonable timeframe within which affected stations can regularize their authorizations.

This decision is expected to ease tensions within the media landscape and reinforce Ghana’s commitment to press freedom.

Industry stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the implementation of the directive.
