Three major unions in Ghana’s tertiary education sector have jointly threatened a nationwide strike if the government fails to pay their book and research allowances by June 13, 2025.
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) expressed deep frustration over the government’s delay in releasing the exchange rate required to compute the allowances.
According to the unions, the delay has created significant uncertainty and hardship for members, who rely on the funds to support academic work and research.
They emphasized that the allowance is not a discretionary payment but a statutory entitlement under their Conditions of Service.
Failure to meet the June 13 deadline, they warned, will result in coordinated industrial action across all affected campuses, potentially disrupting the academic calendar nationwide.
The unions are urging the government to act swiftly to prevent a crisis and safeguard the welfare of lecturers and the stability of the education sector.
