The nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has brought emergency services at major government hospitals to a standstill, plunging healthcare delivery into chaos and leaving countless patients stranded.
On day two of the industrial action, outpatient and emergency departments across the country recorded drastically reduced activity, with hospitals operating at minimal capacity.
A key facility hit hard by the strike is the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. Denkyiraman Radio’s reporter, Original Kaakaiku, who visited the hospital, confirmed the severe impact of the strike on both emergency and routine services.
The absence of nurses and other essential health professionals has left patients in critical need without care, while scheduled procedures and regular consultations remain suspended.
According to on-ground reports, the premises of KATH are currently without a single nurse or doctor on duty, forcing many patients—some of whom have traveled long distances—to wait in uncertainty, with no indication of when services will resume.
