The Minority in Parliament has announced plans to stage nationwide protests in opposition to the government’s recent introduction of a GHC1 levy on petroleum products a move expected to significantly raise fuel prices.
They argue that the fuel levy contradicts the government’s earlier directive for commercial drivers to reduce transport fares by 15%, describing the policy shift as a betrayal of Ghanaians who are already facing economic hardship.
Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding that the levy be scrapped or significantly reduced. He warned of escalating protests if the demand is not met.
“This is not just about a one cedi increase it is about the soul of our nation. If you look at the impact analysis that they did, it is suspect in my view,” he stated.
Calling the levy “unjust and economically devastating,” Annoh-Dompreh urged the public to rise against the tax.
“The Minority, in the coming days, in solidarity with the Ghanaian people, will be staging many actions to demand the withdrawal or reversal of this tax.
We consider it draconian, insensitive, and an action that depicts a government that is out of touch with the people of this country. The NDC is truly revealing its true colours.”
The planned protests are expected to intensify political tensions as the government defends the controversial levy as necessary for stabilizing the energy sector.
