A fire outbreak at the Obuasi Substation on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, has disrupted electricity supply to Obuasi and New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have assured affected residents that restoration efforts are underway.
According to GRIDCo, engineers are currently conducting technical assessments to verify the integrity of the substation equipment before reconnecting customers to the national grid.
ECG Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Owusu Antwi, emphasized the importance of the damaged facility in the regional power supply chain. He stated that technical teams from both ECG and GRIDCo are on-site to assess the extent of the damage and begin the restoration process.
“We apologize to our cherished customers. This outage is due to the fire incident not a deliberate action.
Engineers are working assiduously to restore power as soon as possible,” said Mr. Owusu Antwi.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and restoration timelines will depend on the outcome of the ongoing assessments.
