The Minority in Parliament is calling for the immediate dismissal of Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw and Malik Basintale from their government positions over their alleged support for violence during the Ablekuma North by-election rerun.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, June 16, the Minority accused the two officials of celebrating and justifying acts of violence against opposition members behavior they argue disqualifies them from holding public office.
“The Minority Caucus demands the following immediate actions: the dismissal of violence-endorsing officials, the prosecution of all perpetrators, and a comprehensive police investigation into the security failures,” said Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Asante Laurette Korkor.
“Their celebration and justification of violence against opposition figures disqualify them from holding any public office. This dismissal must happen to demonstrate that the government does not condone political violence.”
The caucus further demanded the immediate prosecution of individuals involved in the violence and called for a full police investigation into alleged security lapses.
MP Asante Korkor specifically urged President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss Dr. Bissiw from her position as CEO of the Minerals Development Fund and Mr. Basintale from his role as Acting CEO of the Youth Employment Agency.
Additionally, the Minority is requesting daily updates on arrests and investigations, including a probe into the alleged role of a senior police officer in the disturbances.
They warned that the President’s handling of the matter will be a defining moment for his leadership and a test of his commitment to safeguarding democracy.
“Silence from the presidency would send the wrong message—that this administration condones political violence,” the MP concluded.
