Gomoa Dominase Ghetto Demolition Turns Violent: One Feared Dead, Three Officers Injured

Tensions escalated into violence near the Gomoa Dominase onion market in the Central Region on Thursday, May 22, 2025, as a joint security operation turned deadly.

One young man is feared dead, and three security officers two police officers, and one immigration officer are in critical condition following clashes during a demolition exercise led by security agencies and the District Security Coordinating Council (DISEC).

The operation was part of a crackdown on criminal activity in a known ghetto area, following the expiration of an eviction notice in April 2025.

Eyewitnesses say chaos erupted when a young man reportedly slipped into a building that later collapsed during the demolition. He was crushed under the debris, sparking outrage among residents.

Angry youths responded by pelting stones and launching attacks on security personnel. Three officers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Gomoa Potsin Polyclinic and the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

Authorities at the scene reportedly retrieved suspected marijuana and weapons, and several young men were arrested for unlawful possession.

Police have promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
