The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of a case challenging President John Mahama’s procedure to potentially remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.
The adjournment follows an injunction application filed to halt the process, which was initially scheduled for April 5. The case will now be heard on May 6, 2025, due to the unavailability of State Attorneys who are currently attending a training session for the ECOWAS Court.
Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region, filed the suit against the Attorney General. He alleges that President John Dramani Mahama breached the Constitution by referring petitions for the Chief Justice’s removal to the Council of State without notifying her.
Filed on March 27, 2025, the suit contends that the President’s action violates Chief Justice Torkornoo’s right to a fair hearing and threatens the independence of the judiciary.
