Two individuals were injured during a heated dispute and scuffle at the launch of the Gomoa Lome Festival in the Central Region. The victims are currently receiving treatment at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.

Reports indicate that the chaos began when Kwame Asare Obeng, a Gomoa Central Independent Parliamentary Candidate known as A Plus, allegedly brandished a pistol during the event. Angry chiefs of Gomoa Lome spoke to Adom News, claiming that A Plus and his bodyguards assaulted several residents, with some reportedly being shocked with electric stun devices.

The traditional authorities stated that all parliamentary candidates in Gomoa Central—including Kwame Dean Yawson of the NDC, A Plus, and Naana Eyiah Quansah of the NPP, who is also the Deputy Interior Minister—were invited to the fundraising event. The proceeds from this event were intended to help build nurses’ quarters for health workers in the area.

According to the chiefs, each candidate was allotted a specific time to speak at the event to prevent confusion. However, A Plus allegedly violated this arrangement by arriving at the same time as Naana Eyiah, the incumbent MP.

Frank Okyere, a member of the planning committee, stated at a press conference in Gomoa Lome that when A Plus arrived, his supporters began insulting the MP for failing to construct roads in the area. The situation escalated when A Plus allegedly pulled out a pistol and attempted to fire shots, while his bodyguards wielding cutlasses began assaulting some residents.

In response to the incident, Okyere called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to increase security in Gomoa Central in light of the upcoming election. He expressed concern that there were indications some individuals were planning to incite trouble.

Nana Kojo Duodu, the Abusupanin of Gomoa Lome, spoke on behalf of the Chief of Gomoa Lome, calling on A Plus to publicly apologize for suggesting that the chiefs were only interested in rice and oil and not in development. He added that A Plus appears to be trying to create chaos in Gomoa ahead of the upcoming 2024 election and urged security agencies to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, David Siripi, a member of A Plus’ campaign team, denied the allegations against their candidate during an engagement with the media.
