The minority spokesperson on Energy and former deputy power minister, John Abu Jinapor, has attributed the current power outages to the debt owed by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO). According to him, GRIDCO owes almost 1.2 billion and has been instructed not to inform their customers about the situation.
Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has stated that the power outages are due to maintenance work on the Atuabo gas plant. The ECG has issued several notices of outages in different parts of the country and has explained that these power cuts are part of routine maintenance.
John Jinapor, the Minority’s Spokesperson on Energy, has criticized the management of the energy sector, stating that the outages are a result of poor management. He also claimed that GRIDCo is concealing the extent of the load shedding from the public.
Jinapor highlighted financial challenges, including Tullow Ghana’s unpaid dues for gas supply over the last nine months. He mentioned that Tullow Ghana is threatening to reduce its gas supply. Additionally, he noted that Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are also threatening to stop supply due to $1.2 billion in unpaid debts.
