President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled the newly launched Adwumawura initiative, designed to create opportunities for vulnerable populations, including those previously engaged in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking at the launch event in Kumasi on Monday, 28 April, President Mahama stated that other disenfranchised groups such as persons living with disabilities, individuals with little or no formal education, and people from conflict-affected areas would also be prioritized under the initiative.
“At least 60% of beneficiaries will be women and girls, with a focus on empowering marginalized communities,” he said. “Additionally, the initiative will target young people who have been involved in illegal mining activities, as well as other underserved groups.”
He emphasized: “We will provide opportunities for galamsey youth to transition into entrepreneurship.”
