The Ghana Union Movement (GUM), led by Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as “Sofo Kyiriabosom,” has clarified its position regarding protests over the suspension of the Chief Justice, firmly distancing the party from any involvement.
Speaking in an interview on Denkyiraman Radio’s National Agenda program, Mr. Andrews emphasized that GUM was neither officially informed nor engaged in any discussions concerning the planned demonstration scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025.
Mr. Andrews explained that he received a call from the New Patriotic Party’s National Organizer, Nana B, regarding President John Mahama’s decision to remove the Chief Justice and efforts to mobilize a demonstration against it. However, he made it clear that he did not give his consent for GUM or its supporters to participate.
He further clarified that GUM had not attended any formal meetings related to the protest.
He revealed that while the party’s Communication Director had been approached informally, no official decision to participate was ever made.
“My Communication Director was invited to a personal meeting where the idea was presented for consideration.
At that time, I was outside Accra. When he called me about it, I told him that we needed to sit down and carefully assess the situation because the protest had no valid basis whatsoever,” Mr. Andrews stated.
The GUM leader reiterated his party’s commitment to upholding constitutional processes regarding the removal of a Chief Justice.
He concluded that GUM would only support legal actions that align with the country’s constitutional framework, emphasizing that the party will back lawful procedures unless proven otherwise.
