Timely intervention by officers of the Assin Fosu District Police Command prevented a potential lynching at the Assin Fosu New Market after a woman was accused of circulating fake Ghana cedi notes. The suspect, who identified herself as Mary Kortey, popularly known as Akweley from Kwashieman in Accra, allegedly used counterfeit GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes to purchase items from multiple traders on Friday.
According to market vendors, suspicions arose when some traders noticed irregularities in the notes they had received. After comparing the cash among themselves, they discovered that several had been paid with similar fake bills traced to the same woman. Tensions escalated, leading to a violent confrontation before the police arrived to rescue her. Officers reportedly retrieved GH¢1,900 in suspected counterfeit currency from her possession, with some traders claiming this was the third time she had been linked to fake money incidents in the market.
At the police station, the woman allegedly pretended to be mentally unstabl op stripping off her clothes and behaving erratically in what officers suspect was an attempt to avoid prosecution. During initial questioning, she claimed the counterfeit notes were supplied by her boyfriend, identified only as Evans, said to be a Nigerian national. The Assin Fosu District Police Command has launched a full investigation and is working to apprehend all individuals connected to the suspected counterfeit operation.
