The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike, effective today, Friday, September 19, 2025.
In a statement signed by General Secretary King James Azortibah, the union explained that the action follows government’s continuous delay in signing their conditions of service.
TEWU is demanding the immediate approval of conditions of service for its members in the Ghana Education Service, public and technical universities, and is also calling for staff of the Ghana Library Authority and the Museums and Monuments Board to be included in the payment of the Continuous Professional Development Allowance this month.
The union further warned employers against intimidating striking staff, stressing that it had exhausted all legal avenues under the Labour Act before resorting to industrial action.
The strike, which comes at the start of a new academic term, is expected to cause major disruptions to the academic calendar across the country.
