The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has cautioned political leaders to intensify efforts in tackling illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, or risk being punished at the polls.
Speaking in an interview, GMA President, Dr. Frank Serebour, said the Association had joined the national campaign against galamsey because of its devastating effects on public health. He explained that polluted water bodies and degraded environments are exposing communities to preventable diseases and worsening the healthcare burden.
“In asking political parties to state their positions and commit to a pact, our goal was to demand clarity. Some people suggested strikes, but those are not sustainable. What politicians truly fear is losing elections. Our message is clear: if you fail to fight galamsey, we will vote you out,” Dr. Serebour declared.
He stressed that the GMA will continue to advocate reforms, raise awareness, and rally public support to demand concrete action from leaders.
“We will not stop speaking up. Advocacy and constant pressure are the surest ways to achieve lasting results,” he added.
