Security expert, Dr. Biney, has described the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as one of the most respected military institutions in West Africa.
Speaking in an interview with Denkyiraman Radio, he noted that decades of experience in peacekeeping missions under the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and ECOWAS have strengthened the professionalism and combat capabilities of Ghana’s military.
His remarks come in response to recent claims by another analyst who suggested that Ghana’s defense system is weak enough that even a neighboring country like Togo could declare war without much resistance.
Dr. Biney dismissed the assertion, stressing that Ghana maintains a relatively stable command structure, which has shielded it from frequent coups and violent disruptions experienced in other countries in the sub-region.
He further explained that the Armed Forces regularly engage in joint exercises with international partners, which keeps them operationally prepared. According to him, the challenge is not training but equipping the military with the right resources.
“The training is sufficient, but capacity is what matters most in meeting the current threats of terrorism,” he emphasized.
Dr. Biney urged government to prioritize the provision of modern equipment for the Armed Forces to match global standards.
“The Ghana Armed Forces have earned respect and positioned themselves on a higher level compared to neighboring countries. Without their experience and readiness, Ghana would have already faced insurgencies and terrorism like others. They are prepared to defend the nation, but what they lack is adequate equipment. This must be the government’s main concern,” he stated.
