The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that one of its helicopters, designated Z9, has crashed while en route from Accra to Obuasi.
According to an official statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at Burma Camp, the aircraft lost contact with radar systems shortly after takeoff at 9:12 a.m. on Tuesday.
The GAF disclosed that the helicopter was carrying a total of eight people three crew members and five passengers at the time of the incident. Efforts are currently underway to re-establish contact and locate the aircraft.
“All efforts are being made to establish contact,” the statement noted, urging the public and media to remain calm as investigations continue. No information has been released yet regarding the identities of those on board.
The release was signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, who serves as the Acting Director General of Public Relations. She assured the public that further updates will be provided as more details become available.
The incident raises concerns about air navigation safety and the operational state of military aircraft within Ghana’s fleet. The Z9, a light utility helicopter, is commonly used by the Ghana Air Force for transport, reconnaissance, and support missions.
