Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Emelia Arthur has issued a stern warning to fisherfolk who continue to engage in illegal practices, particularly light fishing, despite repeated cautions.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on July 30, Minister Arthur emphasized the government’s readiness to enforce the Fisheries Act without hesitation, saying, “We’re warning all fishermen: we’re going to enforce the fisheries law that bans illegal methods like light fishing. If we catch you, don’t say we didn’t warn you.”
She stressed the government’s commitment to preserving marine resources for future generations, noting that while some fishermen have complied with the rules and enjoyed bumper harvests, others continue to defy the law. Under the government’s new “reset agenda,” stricter enforcement measures are expected in the coming weeks to curb harmful fishing practices.
